Tuesday 31st

Pilton: Hawfinch flew north-east at 07:20, also 14 Bramblings west.

Stanford Res: adult Little Gull at the inflow.

Ibstock: 2 Bramblings flew west.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Ruff, 10 Dunlin & 2 Stonechats.

Monday 30th

Rutland Water: Bittern, Lagoon 3, also 3 Whooper Swans somewhere.

Leighfield: 2 Whooper Swans flew south early morning.

Eyebrook Res: no sign of reported Shag today.

Sunday 29th

Hawfinches: just four singles today: Whitwick, Donisthorpe, Pickwell & Manton.

Eyebrook Res: report of a Shag, but no details of where or what age, also Marsh Harrier & 2 Stonechats.

Stanford Res: 3 Great White Egrets flew over at 13:10 heading towards South Kilworth.

Saturday 28th

Big Hawfinch movement today, almost all in the north-west of the county:

Thornton: 26 + (flocks of 4, 2 & 20+).
Sence Valley FP: 19 (6, 12 & 1).
Whitwick: 14 (1 & 13).
Wanlip Meadows: 7.
Pilton (Rutland): 6 ( 3, 2 & 1).
Ellistown: 3.

The majority of birds were moving west. Also lots of thrushes moving, e.g. 1435 Fieldfares over Sence Valley FP, plus Ring Ouzel and Brambling at the same site.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; adult Med Gull, Lagoon 4; Whimbrel & 2 Green Sandpipers, Manton Bay.

Watermead CP North: Marsh Harrier flew high north-west.

Loughborough: Short-eared Owl flew over high.

Friday 27th

Western Park, Leicester: Hawfinch flew west at 08:05.

Grimston: 3 Hawfinches flew west + female Brambling briefly by the grain dryer.

Groby Pool: 3 adult Whooper Swans.

North Luffenham Airfield: Common Redpoll ringed.

Hicks Lodge: 2 Stonechats.

Martinsthorpe: 136 Fieldfares.

Thursday 26th

Albert Village Lake: juvenile Shag.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; 3 Ringed Plovers, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: Black-tailed Godwit, 5 Ruff & 3 Stonechats.

Stoughton Airfield: 2 Stonechats.

Wednesday 25th

Hicks Lodge: male & female Ring Ouzels, also 1 Stonechat.

Rutland Water: Black Tern, North Arm.

Ibstock: Rock Pipit and Brambling flew south this morning.

Saddington Res: Great White Egret.

Tuesday 24th

Manton: Hawfinch flew south at 13:15.

Monday 23rd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2.

Watermead CP South: Rock Pipit flew south over the Mammoth at 10:50.

Eyebrook Res: Great White Egret, Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Ruff & 2 Stonechats.

Sunday 22nd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; female Scaup, South Arm 3 (Lapwing hide); 2 Red-crested Pochards, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: 12 adult Whooper Swans at the inflow, also 10 Ruff, Ringed Plover & 2 Stonechats.

Leighfield Fishponds: 2 Hawfinches flew west this morning.

Saturday 21st

Newbold Verdon: Black Redstart in Old Farm Lane/ Moat Close area but mobile. Please respect residents' privacy if visiting.

Croft Hill: 7 Shags flew low south at 10:15.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still on Lagoon 2.

Eyebrook Res: Great White Egret.

Bradgate Park: Woodcock flushed from the copse between Old John & the war memorial this morning, also Swallow north & 6 Fieldfares south.

Friday 20th

Redmile: 2 Grey Plovers flew west early afternoon.

Thursday 19th

Stanford Res: DUSKY WARBLER trapped on the Northants side late morning and released at the inflow car park at 11:10; seen again in hawthorn bushes on the Leics side of the inflow at 11:45, but no further sign by dusk.

Thornton Res: Great White Egret.

Wednesday 18th

Redmile: 4 Whooper Swans flew over this morning and dropped into Belvoir Lakes. Also 2 Swallows this afternoon.

Tuesday 17th

Leighfield Fishponds: Hawfinch at 08:50 for 20 minutes then flew off west.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon, Lagoon 2; Little Stint, 3 Dunlin & Ringed Plover, Lagoon 4; 2 Stonechats, Lagoon 1.

Stanford Res: 2 Great White Egrets on the Leics side then flew west.

Sunday 15th

Melton CP: Yellow-browed Warbler calling in willows this morning.

Bradgate Park: 2 Hawfinches flew over the war memorial near Old John this morning.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; Little Stint, Lagoon 4.

Eyebrook Res: 2 Rock Pipits at the inflow; 2nd-winter Mediterranean Gull at the island. Also of interest, 10 small geese at the island, which have been reported as probable Cackling Geese. However, the pattern of all the mantle and wing covert feathers (basically brownish grey with a narrow dark subterminal band and pale tip), and the very Barnacle-like faces of 3 of them shows that they must be Barnacle Goose hybrids, probably with Cackling Goose, but possibly with one of the small races of Canada Goose.

Saturday 14th

Ibstock: Hawfinch flew west over Pretoria Road this morning. There is a bit of a national influx of this species at the moment, so it's well worth learning the flight calls if you aren't familiar with them, as many must be missed.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2, but no reports of Cattle Egret since Thursday.

Eyebrook Res: adult & 1st-winter Med Gulls at the inflow this afternoon, also Greenshank, 10 Ruff, 4 Dunlin & Stonechat, + Ringed Plover at the island.

Longmoor Lake: 5 Stonechats.

Friday 13th

Leighfield Fishponds: Hawfinch flew over.

Billesdon: female/imm Merlin near the A47 this morning.

Loughborough: Brambling flew west.

Thursday 12th

Rutland Water: Cattle Egret, North Arm this afternoon, on the Fishponds bund then flew into the sheep field behind. View from the end of the road past Fishponds Cottage. Also Greenshank there. Drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; 2 Little Stints, Manton Bay; Little Stint, Lagoon 4; Marsh Harrier, Lagoon 3.

Melton Mowbray: Firecrest with tit flock this morning in Play Close, but no further sign when looked for later.

Eyebrook Res: 1st-winter Med Gull at the inflow this evening.

Ibstock: Rock Pipit flew south this morning.

Burton Flats: 2 Wheatears.

Wednesday 11th

Braunstone: 2 Gannets flew east over Bendbow rise at 08:50.

Rutland Water: Cattle Egret roosted at the Fishponds this evening; drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; 2 Little Stints still, Manton Bay, also the long-staying, non-migratory, copper-ringed Whimbrel of presumably captive origin, Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: Greenshank, 8 Ruff, 2 Dunlin & Green Sandpiper.

Ibstock: Fieldfare flew south.

Tuesday 10th

Rutland Water: no sign of Cattle Egret today, but drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 2; 2 Little Stints, 4 Ringed Plovers, 9 Ruff, Green Sandpiper & Dunlin, Manton Bay; Greenshank, North Arm; 2 Stonechats, Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: 7 Ruff, 4 Dunlin & 1 Stonechat.

Monday 9th

Rutland Water: Cattle Egret, Lagoon 2 this afternoon.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Dunlin, 7 Ruff & 2 Stonechats.

Also 2 late records for Friday 6th - a Woodlark between Snarestone & Shackerstone (SK357082) and c130 Pink-footed Geese over Leighfield.

Sunday 8th

Billesdon: Yellow-browed Warbler calling with Long-tailed Tits in Weare Close this morning.

Rutland Water: 2 drake American Wigeons still.

North Luffenham Airfield: 910 Redwings flew west during the day.

Friday 6th

Rutland Water: 2 drake American Wigeons still (Lagoons 2 & 4 I assume), also White-fronted Goose & Ruff, Lagoon 4; 3 Bitterns, Marsh Harrier & Black-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 3; Ringed Plover, North Arm.

Thursday 5th

Rutland Water: 2 Little Stints, North Arm.

Wednesday 4th

Braunstone: Yellow-browed Warbler with tit flock in wood behind Bendbow Rise & Pilkington Road this afternoon.

Tuesday 3rd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 4 + 4 Little Stints; Red-necked Grebe still, North Arm; Garganey, Lagoon 3 & Whimbrel, Lagoon 1.

Monday 2nd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lagoon 4.

Sunday 1st

Eyebrook Res: Greenshank, Green Sandpiper & 13 Ruff.
