Meetings and Outings


Indoor Meetings
2010

 

Each year the Society stages eight indoor meetings (one a month with a summer break).These are currently held at two alternating venues: the Church Lounge at Oadby Trinity Methodist Church, Harborough Road, (off the central car park) Oadby Leicester LE2 4LA (click here for map), and the Rothley Centre, 12 Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, Leicester LE7 7PR (click here for map). Both these venues are next to large car parks.

The meetings feature illustrated talks by experienced ornithologists, artists, conservationists or photographers, whilst you can also socialise with other members and meet the committee. All meetings are free to members. For more information, contact the Meetings Secretary (contact details).

All meetings are held on the first Friday of the month, and start at 7.30pm.

February 5th – Rothley
Paul Hobson – ‘Derbyshire Birds’

Paul lectures on Environmental Science in Sheffield. He started photography 16 years ago. He has travelled abroad for photography, but definitely prefers getting images in the dank and grey UK. In 2008 he won the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year – Specially Commended – Bird Behaviour’ award. Go to www.paulhobson.co.uk to see some of his images.

March 5th – Oadby
Michael Leach – ‘The Secret Life of Snowdonia’

Michael is well known to LROS members from his previous visits to us. He is one of the world’s top wildlife photographers, his work having been used in books and magazines in over 40 countries. He has also done a lot of filming for television wildlife programmes, and is the author of seven books to date.

April 9th – Rothley
Tony Bates – ‘The Folklore of Woodland and Hedgerow’

Tony is a Wildlife and Landscape Photographer and lives in Lincolnshire. He was a competition winner with a shot of the Comet Hale-Bopp. He presents his images as dissolve projection slide shows with music included.

May 7th – Oadby
Carl Baggott – ‘In Search of Wild Britain’
Carl has just finished his three year stint as the Chairman of LROS; prior to that he was the editor of ‘The Grebe’. His talk will take us on a tour of some of his favorite locations in Britain, with images of some truly wonderful wildlife and scenery. There will be something for everyone from high mountain peaks to the sea shore and many points in between.

October 1st – Rothley
John Wyatt – ‘ Ruff Passage or Wandering Waders’

John is well known to LROS members having given talks over many years. He has worked in Africa for more than 10 years and also produced the ‘Teach Yourself Bird Sound ‘ series of cassettes. He has lead wildlife tours through Africa and Europe. This talk concentrates on the migration of the Ruff, and the African and European Waders it meets on its journey from Africa to Europe and back again.

November 5th – Oadby
Mike Lane – ‘The Pantanal’

Mike has presented quite a few of his talks to LROS over the years. He tends to spend quite a few months in the areas he is photographing to get to know the wildlife present. Mike has now gone digital and will present his latest talk on the Pantanal , the huge wetland area of Brazil. To see more of Mike’s work go to www.nature-photograpy.co.uk

December 3rd – Rothley
Chris Andrews – ‘The Return of the Red Kite'

Chris is the Visitor and Promotions Officer for the RSPB at the Top Lodge Centre in Fineshade Woods in Northamptonshire. He was to present this talk last February, but it had to be cancelled because of the severe weather.
